The Weber Q220 Gas Grill Is Great Value For Money

With the Weber Q220 Gas Grill you don’t have to worry about sacrificing quality for portability. This weber is a master of design with an exceptional quality porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grate. This top quality grill can cook a whole chicken thanks to the seven inch lid but still packs up to be less than 32 inches. The Q220 is really just an upgraded version of the Weber Q200 and therefore the two reviews are very similar. The Q220′s extra features are: an electronic ignition, a taller lid and a very useful built-in thermometer. Customer reviews on the Q220 vary a bit from those of the Q200 with some additional tips being added.

The grate is what really makes this grill so fantastic and as mentioned in the opening paragraph it’s absolutely top quality. Weighing in at about 25+ lbs it provides great and even heat distribution with no hot or cold spots. Another clever little feature is the  fold away side trays that are extremely useful (to rest some grilling tools). The Weber Q220 works great wherever you want to use it – the beach, for a picnic or just in the backyard. When taking the grill on a outing the fold out plates are especially handy to rest your grilling accessories. Just keep in mind that although the grill is portable, its not that lite because of the heavy duty high quality grate and weighs about 40 lbs. One person can carry the grill, but not for too far and it’s probably just better and easier if someone gives you a hand.

Preheat the Weber Q220 for about 10 minutes and you’ll be ready to cook up a storm. The medium gas setting is normally more than sufficient to cook with once the grill has been preheated. Some customer reviews however claim the grill can be ready to cook on in as short as 3-5 minutes if preheated at the maximum heat setting with the lid closed. You will have 280 inches of real cooking space with excellent heat distribution where you can grill anything from burgers to steaks irrespective of the exact heating up period required. Breakfast is not a problem either – just purchase the griddle to place on top of the grate and you’re ready to cook some bacon and eggs.

The grill operates on 14.1 or 16.4 oz propane cylinders (neither of which are included) that will only last for a few grill sessions – each canister lasts anything from 1.5 – 2.5 hours – it all just depends on how much food you’re grilling and what heat settings are being used. Although the canisters are small and don’t last all that long, their size greatly increases portability. Have a few spare cylinders around the house in case you run out of gas half way through preparing a nice juicy steak. The canisters are available at most hardware stores or places like Walmart. If you absolutely love grilling and do it on very regular basis, it will be worthwhile to buy a universal adaptor for a 20 lb liquid propane tank so that you don’t have to keep on buying the small cylinders.

Cleaning the grill is not as quick as washing a tea cup, but relatively easy as far as cleaning grills goes. Just heat up the grill with the maximum setting and it just about becomes its own dishwasher. Scrape the grate with a bronze-bristle brush once it has cooled. The grate can also be removed rather effortlessly in order to wash it with some hot water & mild dish washing liquid. Cleaning methods like burn-off or washing with soapy water will require the grate to be seasoned again. All the drippings collect at the bottom of the grill in the drip pan which is easily accessible to be replaced.

The Weber Q220 Grill is perfect for anyone who requires:
(a) A grill to use on a small patio or terrace (but looks just as good in the backyard – just add the stationary cart)
(b) A good value for money portable grill (Weber is synonymous with Grilling and Quality).

CONS:

Any product review unfortunately does have some cons and the Weber Q220 is no different. Complaints on the Q200 have also been included as the two grills (Q220 & Q220) are very similar. The good news is that less than 1/10 customers did not like the Q200 and even fewer complaints were found about the Q220. Complaints ranged from regulator problems to shipping damages. Complaints also included comments about the side trays not being able to handle heavy items. The side tables are there for convenience to place lighter objects on (grill tools for example). So leave your dumbbells in the garage where they belong big boy. These complaints are however few and far between. Weber customer service is top notch and they have received very high ratings from customers for dealing with complaints such as broken parts and regulator issues, so just get in contact with them on the off chance that you maybe experience some problems. Unfortunately indirect cooking is also not an option with the Q220. The Weber Q300 or Q320 is what you’re looking for if you wish to do indirect cooking with a portable grill.

ADVICE & TIPS:

(1) If you can afford the cart get one as it just makes things a whole lot easier. The collapsible cart does appear a bit dodgy and wobbly but works without a hitch. The stationary cart not only looks very stylish it also works very well.
(2) Heat up the grill for about 10 minutes with the lid closed before you start cooking. However shorter warm up periods will also do depending on what you’re cooking. Once sufficiently heated up, you can just drop the heat as required when you start cooking.
(3) Don’t forget to take some matches or a lighter if you’re planning an outing where it could be windy. The wind can sometimes make lighting the grill with the electric starter a bit tricky. However once lit with the lighter you shouldn’t have any problems with the wind.
(4) Wash the protective wax coating off the grate with a bit of mild dish washing liquid before your first grill otherwise your food might taste a bit funny as a result of the coating (probably a good tip for any new grill).
(5) Seasoning the grill before your first BBQ is recommended. The entire grate needs to be treated with a thin coat of solid vegetable shortening. Preheat grill for 15 minutes and then place the grate in the grill. With the lid still closed you now turn the burners to Medium-Off-Medium. Allow grill to heat grate for 1 to 1.5 hours and turn all burners off. Don’t remove the grate from the grill until cooled. Seasoning is not a must, but recommended and will just provide even better performance.
(6) A Weber Vinyl Cover is definitely worth investing in as it will prolong the life of your grill as well as protect it from debris, dust and discoloration (if stored outside).

CONCLUSION:
The Weber Q220 is perfect if you are looking for a portable grill – whether it’s because of space limitations or maybe you just don’t want a mammoth grill big enough to cook for a whole army. The Q220 has great heat distribution, cooks delicious meals, can easily grill for 4-6 people, is as easy 1 2 3 to assemble and has a couple of extra features that are not just for show. It might be a bit more expensive than the cheaper imports, but it’s definitely worth every penny and of course it’s a Weber which means quality, durability and reliability. The Weber Q220 is what one expects from a Weber Grill – great value for money. The Q220 Grill is highly recommended if you are in the market for a portable or smaller type grill and with more than 9/10 customer reviews giving this grill 4 to 5 stars you can’t go wrong. If you are in the market for this type of grill and not looking for a large grill, then look no further. The Weber Q220 is just what you’ve been searching for.
